There is no stopping a woman who has entered into the mystery. Sandra has lived her life without giving much thought, even denied intimate questions, surrounding her father's suicide. What she encounters is a tome of revelations and often shocking truths that lead her deeper into the abyss, only to propel her to the surface with new found truths. Sandra, slowly piecing together loose ends, begins solving the mysteries of so long ago, integrating the past into the present. It's about a young girl's hopes and fears and a father's broken dreams. The psychic father/daughter bond was severed during an unexpected explosion that lasted fifteen hours during which her father's bloody rage held his wife and daughter hostage. Sandra, in her unfaltering attempt to seek the truth, mines the events of her past with courage and steadfast determination and ultimately discovers the fate of one's own personal choices.

As I knew/know the participants in this book, I marveled as to how the writer, after the upbringing she had with all the moving, has developed into an excellent writer with degrees! Certainly an aspiration of her father's. The story certainly clarified what at the time were closely held family secrets . Most of them fairly accurate.

Sandra and I were cousins. I remember the summer that she and her mother Florence visited us at Findley Lake, NY. I believe this was before and not after the life-changing 15 hour sit down with her father. Our upbringing had nothing to compare!

Congratulations Sandra on the unusual and creative presentation. Cousin Jim

Great read!! I was thoroughly engrossed from the first sentence to the last! What an amazing journey for the author to piece together her father's life so many years after his death! Very moving!
If you have lived with an alcoholic, were raised as an only child, have been part of a family secret, you need to read this book. It is excellently written, and you may discover the origins of some of your attitudes, apptitudes and opinions for yourself.

Sandra Drake Scott’s memoir of finding her father begins with an excerpt from his own memoir, an evocation of a time past when “chastity and innocence burned like a clear steady light in a woman’s eyes” and ends with her explanation of why, at age fifty, she decided to write her own autobiography. The catharsis she found in coming to terms with the man behind the myth she’d lived with for so long was intense and hard-won but it also brought her a measure of compassion for the man who had loomed like a malevolent deity over most of her life. It also brings forth our profound admiration for what she has achieved.

Like Jeannette Walls’ Glass Castle, this is a story of a domineering man who never achieved success by his own standards, whose intellectual gifts bordered on madness and whose chase for employment took him cross-country, trailing his hapless family behind him, at the mercy of his whims and his moods.

The chapters “intercut” pages from Drake’s own diary (the “red journal” of the title) and Scott’s memories of the same events. Nearly twenty years younger than her siblings, she listens in awe as her brother Ramey talks about wonders she can hardly imagine, particularly the circus with its exotic creatures—long-nosed elephants and long-necked giraffes. Moments like this lighten the intensity of other moments, and Scott has a real gift for sketching in “characters” in brief scenes and short paragraphs. Our heart aches for the child she was, so eager to please her father, and so bright and curious. So vulnerable.

Her entire childhood became a series of negotiations between the reality she was experiencing and the reality her father was trying to create out of sheer willpower and delusion. What Scott proves here is that biology is not destiny and her own triumph is not just that she survived and thrived, but that ultimately, she was able to see her father’s pain and understand where it came from. The tragedy is that he was not able to become the man he wanted to be. The triumph is that his daughter succeeded.

This is a hopeful book that takes the reader on a journey to redemption and ultimately, out o darkness into light. Beautifully written, emotionally brave, and powerfully affecting, it is a family story that will resonate deeply with anyone who has ever suffered from a “complicated” relationship.
